Finding a shiny Pokemon is a very rare occurrence. I have only ever found two in the wild in all my games (besides the red Gyarados) and they were a shiny Skuntank and a shiny Sneasel (who is now a Weavile... named Duskmoon!) What people do to get shiny legendaries (as far as I've heard) is they save in front of the legendary (as you always should to ensure capture) and they keep turning off their game and re-battling the legendary until that very small percentage of shiny Pokemon likelihood kicks in and it's a shiny Pokemon. However, and correct me if I'm wrong with this, this process can take days before it works (weeks? Maybe?) To find shinies, I suggest using my approach and checking the GTS. I've seen all sorts of shiny Pokemon on there (even shiny Mews and Darkrais!) but if you do not have wi-fi, getting a shiny will be very difficult.

To get my shinies, I chain on Pearl. I've found a few this way. For the impossible ones, I hack. I know. Hacking. AH! Well, I guess I'm just evil, then. Hehe.
