After leaving the lab, Kenny and Piyo headed off in the direction of Route 1, the cliche-yet-awesome forest. They stopped just at the sign that said "Now entering Route 1!"
"Well, Piyo, this is it. The adventure begins here. It's just you, me, and Melody the shiny Chinchou. Let's make this first step as dramatic as possible. Go, Melody!" Kenny said, releasing his Chinchou from her Pokeball.
"We should hum the dramatic opening theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey!" Piyo chirped.
<I'm all for that,> Melody said. <I love music.>
And so, the three began to hum the dramatic music as Kenny and Piyo stepped forward and Melody kinda hopped with her fins onto Route 1.

~Coo...~
The relaxed call sounded as a plump bird yawned from it's perch as it watched the Pokémon go about their lives. It ruffled it's feathers, looking about to check that it's flock were still behind it. Yes, they were foraging in the trees, some, having eaten enough, resting like it. It saw their leader, a Starravia, watching protectively over the group. The other day they'd been attacked by a pair of trainers, and one of their number had actually asked to go with the trainers. Starravia was a great leader and allowed all the flock to do as they please and leave if they wanted, but he was also very protective and preferred the flock to stay large.
Starly heard the strange sound and recognised it as the humming of a human. It cawed and trilled loud warnings, and the flock members followed suit until the entire flock were being led by Starravia to safety. That is, almost all of the flock. There was one Starly left behind, who had no friends or family within the flock, but had rather flown with it to escape. Presently, it felt that a trainer would be a good way to grow strong, and swooped over to meet Kenny. ~Trainer, hello. Would you perhaps care for a battle?~ it asked politely.

"Starly! Hihihihihi!" Piyo immediately chirped before being silenced by a glare from Kenny.
"Yeah, a battle sounds great. You're rather polite... I like that," Kenny said. "Melody, are you up for that?" The Chinchou nodded, which for the round fish-thing involved rolling. Kenny glanced around. The scene was perfect, a clear area of path framed by trees serving as the battlefield, a slight breeze sending a few stray leaves through the area... all it needed was... He pulled out a tape recorder and pressed play. The ever-famous "Wild Pokemon Encounter" music began to play.

Starly cocked it's head as it heard the music start to play. ~That is and interesting composition. Bouncey, fast. You have good taste.~ it complimented, smiling as much as a beak would allow. It shuffled it's wings, then flapped them a couple of times to allow it to become airborne, then faced it's opponent. A Chinchou, hm? It wondered where Kenny had found it. Presumably from the Laboratory.
Starly extended a wing to Melody. ~Ladies first.~ he insisted, suggesting that he was not a lady. A male Starly, then. A rather cute Starly, with a gentle and good personality. But just what was he like in battle?

<How nice of you. Alright, then,> Melody said. She glanced at Kenny.
"Why don't you start off with your special move, Psybeam?" Kenny said. Though he wanted to look calm and collected, he was a bit excited. This was almost exactly how he had pictured his first battle... although he hadn't expected the Starly to be so polite, but it was nice. A definite refreshing change from his usual company. As he thought that, he glanced at Piyo, who was attempting to count all the pebbles on the path. Melody, meanwhile, was preparing a Psybeam attack.

Starly watched carefully as Melody prepared her attack. He considered the various angled of projection the Chinchou would be capable of, and discovered the area of which the attack would be in. Basically the whole area. If Chinchou could shoot far enough, a very large distance indeed would be needed to put between Starly and Chinchou. Starly descided to move at the very last moment. As the beam came towards him, the bird swiftly shifted his primaries, making him lose height. He then angled his beak at Chinchou, swooping over to the fish, and dodging the Psybeam. He grew faster and faster, until he was now swooping in a Quick Attack.

"Melody, this is a good opportunity to use Bubble," Kenny said. He allowed himself a small grin. Starly was smart, and Melody was doing her part well. Though it was only the first of many battles, it was quite intense, and Piyo had even fallen silent to watch. Melody started to send bubbles off in front of her to both slow Starly down and do some damage.

Starly used the momentum from the Quick Attack to push himself faster. He was keeping at the attack- why? This Starly was supposed to be an intelligent gentleman! He clicked his beak absent-mindedly as he swooped towards Melody, beady eyes watching the bubbles as they shot towards him. His high speed enabled him to cut right through the Bubble. True, it still hurt; he winced in pain, twittering softly under his breath, but it hurt less. That was all he had wanted. He kept going with his Quick Attack, although it was a little slower now.
