"Firian!" Arienette called for her Growlithe, throwing the Pokeball into the air.
Firian appeared in a flash of red and wagged his tail happily at his new trainer.
"Firian, we're going to train." She told him, glancing for a moment up at the forest a hundred yards away marking the beginning of Route One. She and Sel had been on the verge of entering when they heard a very large rustling. The two agreed they could train Firian a little while before they entered the dark forest.
"Okay, Firian," Arienette turned around and leaned down slowly, reaching for something just out of Firian's sight.
She spun and threw a stick into air, aimed just above Firian's head.
"Bite!" she commanded.
Firian was suddenly surprised to have a stick flung at him, so his reaction was a little late. He jumped into the air, jaws wide, but his teeth closed viciously on only emptiness.
He landed on his feet and lowered his head, ashamed he had let his trainer down first thing.
"Don't worry, Firian, that was great!" Arienette cheered. Firian's tail wagged hesitantly, unsure of why he was being praised. The tilt of his head said everything.
"You weren't expecting it, and you still almost got that stick. So, you're fast. And, I could hear your teeth snap together from way over hear, so we know you're also strong. See?" Arienette told the Growlithe, walking over to him and rubbing his ears gently.
"Now, let's try that again. Bite!" Arienette ducked down low on the ground suddenly.
Sel, well behind ran straight at them, a larger stick in his mouth. He twisted his head and threw it toward Firian.
Firian jumped over Arienette and clamped onto the stick in midair. The stick broke in his jaws and he tried to twist as he crashed toward the ground. Firian hit his shoulder and rolled a few yards, coming to rest on his back, legs splayed in the air and tongue lolling out.
I did it! Firian yipped excitedly, rolling back onto his feet and running at Arienette, his usual seriousness lost in his jubilation.
Arienette met the joyful Growlithe in a bear hug on the ground, wrestling with him for a few moments while Sel looked on, too dumbfounded to be disapproving.
Arienette straitened back up, brushing grass and twigs off her clothes, so very glad she was wearing black.
"Well done, Firian," she said, still wearing a grin completely at odds with her usual darker moods.
Sel shook his head, still unsure what to think of this sudden change in his human. People are weird. he decided, watching as Arienette tried to regain some semblance of her normal composure.
