"All right, everyone," Jax said flinging up his Pokeballs, "Come on out!"
Three Pokemon appeared, and Furnblaze ran up beside them.
"Our first gym challenge is coming up," Jax said, "And I'm not certain we're strong enough to beat it yet. You guys with me?"
All four of the Pokemon gave enthusiastic cries, and Jax smiled.
"OK, let's practice our moves," he pulled several firm, but flexible plastic sticks from his bag and snapped his wrist, sending them, hissing, into the ground before the Pokemon. "You can attack these as much as you like," he said, "They won't break. Although you Cyril..." he paused, as Cyril, using Confusion, had pulled the sticks from the ground, and was now playing around, turning the training into a game.
Jax laughed, and so did Gareth, who was in his Flygon form for once, standing beside Jax.
With a yip of excitement, Furnblaze jumped to try to catch one of the sticks, and even the stubborn Taillow decided it wanted to play. Duskull, disinterested, almost wandered off, but spotted its reflection in a pond, and floated over, and started pulling faces.
Jax even subjected himself to training, striking a dead tree over and over, pounding grooves and craters into its surface. He used practically every hard point on his limbs; knuckles, the heel of his palm, feet, elbows, knees, and a variety of other strikes, even going for his claws, which slashed grooves into the wood.
"Whoooooo!" Duskull said to his reflection, trying to get it just right.
Furnblaze, Cyril and Tailow were playing something akin to keep-away; Cyril was trying to keep six plastic rods from the bird and the fox, while Tailow was using his speed to his advantage, often striking one of the rods hard enough to cause it to bend. Furnblaze was interspersing his jumping with blasts of Ember, carefully avoiding aiming anywhere near Cyril.
After several minutes, Jax performed a kick so powerful, the dead tree groaned, and began to collapse towards him. He quickly ducked out of the way, and watched as the tree collapsed.
"I'm still not used to that," he commented, looking at his arm, which was hardly even scratched from the pounding.
"OK, guys, that's enough!" he called, and the Pokemon stopped what they were doing, "I think we've done enough for one day."
Duskull decided to try his scary face, and snuck up on Jax from behind, then said, "Duuuskuuuulll!
Jax just laughed. "Nice try, Duskull," he said, "That would definitely have worked on someone else."
