Ethan stepped onto Route One, his tails swishing softly against the fronds of a fern he passed. Lia walked beside him, still in her Ninetales form and sniffing the air delicately. Lia stiffened, scenting the sharp scent of a Pokèmon close by. "Don't move," Lia warned as bushes to one side began to twitch violently.

Rattata was awake. Awake, and it wasn't spring yet. How annoying! Other Rattata had warned it about hibernating too close to the path of the trainers! It was a shame it hadn't listened, but it had wanted the protection it offered; most Pokémon avoided trainers and so avoided the area, but the smaller, weaker Pokémon would stay near the path for protection. Rattata had been woked up by the loud stepping and talking and what have you of trainers going past. A defensive reflex, but since they hadn't noticed it, it was wasted.
Rattata growled. No, perhaps it wasn't wasted. It would teach them a lesson not to disturb hibernaters. The mouse sprang at the Ninetails 'morph it could see, clawing at him.

Ethan grunted as the Rattata struck his chest and he grabbed it around its body and flung it away, some of the flesh of his arm coming away in the teeth of the small Pokèmon. Ethan snatched his only Pokèball from hid belt and tossed it in the air, calling for his Vulpix through clenched teeth. That hurt! Vulpix appeared in front of him in a flash of red. "Ember," Ethan commanded, keeping one eye on the Rattata and one eye on what he was doing. He tore a short length of cloth from the bottom of his shirt and tied it around his bite wound with his good hand and his teeth. That done, he returned his attention fully to the battle in front of him. Vulpix glanced nervously at the Rattata. The scent of blood hung in the air and the Rattata was plainly the cause of Ethan's wound, but Vulpix was a little scared and a little angry. She figured the anger woul be better for a battle and so focused on that. The ember attack flamed around her small muzzl, and Vulpix leaded forward as she unleashed the attack, closing the distance between herself and Rattata.

Rattata was pleased to see Ethan tie a makeshift bandage around the bite wound. Good, it had hurt him. Served him right. The Normal type knew that its kind were reknowned for their powerful bite from sharp front teeth, and it was good to put that to use sometimes. Trainers often assumed that because Rattata were fairly common, they were weak. They would be shown wrong! Rattata was hit by the Ember, wincing slightly as it passed. That hurt a lot more than it let show.
Rattata was a little glad at the end to see that firstly, it was not Burned, and secondly, Vulpix had used a long-range attack and so had not moved near itself. That was good, because then it could get a good run-up for whatever of it's two offensive attacks it should choose, one of Tackle and Quick Attack. It chose Quick Attack, more accurate and slightly more painful. The mouse Pokémon shot forward in a sudden burt of speed, aiming to strike.
