Character
Name:
Shayna Lynn Berst
Age:
16 Years
Gender:
Female
Pokemorph:
She's not.
Appearance:
Shayna is an average sixteen year old girl. There's nothing exactly remarkable about her appearance, although she is fairly pretty in her averageness. The most unusual thing about Shayna would have to be her red hair - yup, she's a ginger. She also has pale, pale skin that rarely tans and would much rather burn, even if she just barely steps out into the sun for a few minutes. Her nose and cheeks are dotted with freckles, but they're pale. Her darkest freckles reside on her shoulders, which are usually pink with sunburn if she doesn't wear sleeves.
She stands at about five feet five inches, nice and average. Her hair's fairly long, and a bit frizzy, though she prefers to describe it as insanely curly. Either way, she manages to stand out, even against her will. There are only so many ways to hide yourself when you stand at an average height, with long, poofy red hair. Shayna is very skinny, probably only one-hundred and fifteen pounds. She doesn't carry any of this weight on her arms or legs, though, and she has very skinny ankles and wrists. However, she does have a tiny bit of a belly. She couldn't get away with having no fat at all, after all.
Her eyes are confusing, as they are the color of hazel that seems to change from day to day, or sometimes hour to hour. Sometimes they're more green, sometimes more brown, but they are usually a murky mixture of the two. It's not exactly attractive, but Shayna doesn't let that bother her. She sometimes wears blue contacts, which barely cover the brown in her eyes, causing a unique mixture of the colors. Shayna has a small-ish nose, and her eyes are fairly large, making puppy dog faces incredibly easy for her to make. She uses that to her advantage at times.
As for her style, Shayna doesn't care much for fashion. She prefers to wear faded, dusty jeans and a T-shirt. She has a bit of a country style, you could say. She's the sort of girl you'd expect to see at a stable. And she does have a thing for Ponyta and riding, so it's not far off-base. Her fingernails are picked down nearly to the quick, so she forgoes nail polish, and she hates the look of her toes, and refuses to wear flip flops or show them off.
Personality:
Shayna is a quiet girl, who doesn't go out of her way to talk to others. In fact, she often times goes out of her way to stay away from them, much to the displeasure of her family, who is all about social gatherings and friends. Shayna, however, would much rather just sit around with her daemon and talk to him, or help out with some Pokemon. She's always connected to them better than with people. She's a bit frightened of people, to be honest, and hates crowds. However, she would love to go out on a trail ride with a group of Ponyta around her. She's really big into that sort of thing.
She's a lot country. She likes to be polite to everyone, unless they're really rude to her. She holds doors open for people behind her, even if they're a good five or six feet away still. She's often late to things because she'll go out of her way to be nice. She has a soft drawl, because her parents are extreme rednecks, but her's is nowhere near as bad as their's. She's very accepting of everyone, and tries to see things from the other person's point of view. Her parent's never agreed with this, but she's kept it up all through her life, despite their complaints.
Shayna is a bit paranoid. And by a bit, it's more like a lot. Shayna dislikes being in strange situations. She doesn't like to see strange people passing her. She's always afraid of what could happen. She's extremely cautious, and thinks things through very well before she acts, unless under severe pressure or extremely angry. A lot of the time, she asks her daemon, Cadell, to make choices for her. She just doesn't like to make decisions, in case they blow up in her face later on.
Being so quiet and, quite honestly, anti-social, Shayna has to have other hobbies. She's a big reader. Any book she can get her hands on, she will read. So she knows a lot about training even now, before her journey. Cadell is often bored by how she can sit around and just read or look at pictures all day. She also loves to take care of Pokemon, and her parents had let her take care of a baby Starly once. She had learned a lot of responsibility from that, and it had decided her on a career as a breeder - at least partly. Shayna is a very nurturing type, and refuses to let anything in need go without her help. Shayna, however, also has a brave side. There's something tough in her that wants to survive, to show she's good enough. This is more apparent in Cadell than her, but it's easy to see she's determined when she's caring for someone or something. She has great passion.
History:
Shayna was born on a ranch, a small one. There were several ranches around the general area, and she was close friends with the oldest son next door. She had a lot of chores to do, but she always had time to hang out with him, or to just read or do what she wanted. Cadell was usually in the form of a sandshrew back then, running along at her side, full-tilt, and often times running headfirst into walls. Shayna was always amused by his antics, even if she often had a constant headache due to his clumsiness. The two helped the ranch stay productive, even while the other ones around them were falling under. Shayna was always worried about the family's money, even when her parents told her not be. She kept her grades up at school, which didn't always get her friends. In fact, she very rarely had friends.
When she was eight, she found an abadoned baby Starly on her property. She begged her parents to let her try to care for it, and so they let her. The boy next door helped her, too. The Starly was one of her closest confidents for the months while she raised it. Cadell would interpret for the two of them, and they had nice long conversations. Then, one day, she took breakfast out to the Starly and it wasn't there. She was devastated. Cadell tried to comfort her; she had done her best and it wasn't her fault that instinct had called the bird-like Pokemon back to nature, but it didn't help. In fact, Shayna withdrew so much that her parents nearly sent her away to get help. When Shayna got word of that however, she went off in a flurry of anger and ended up overstraining herself by doing all the possible chores. Cadell urged her to stop, and to have some real fun, after all she was already in trouble. For once, she listened to her daemon's fun-loving side. She snuck into the Tauros corral, which she had never been allowed to do before. She was only nine, and had no idea what she was doing around the big creatures. She had spent all her time before working the Ponyta.
To make a long story short and to spare you the grizzly details, Shayna ended up in the hospital for a good four months. She had a broken wrist, broken leg, a concussion, and long scrapes and numerous bruises. It took her a long time to get better, and much physical therapy. Due to the cost of all this, her parents lost the ranch. Shayna never really quit blaming herself when they moved into a small city, and lived in a cheap apartment. Cadell hated it there, which only reflected on the way Shayna felt about it. She had left her only human friend behind, and all of the family's Ponyta, and everything that she loved. She cried herself to sleep for months, wishing and hoping for a chance to go back.
It never came. The family learned to get by, and eventually accumulated enough cash to buy themselves a nice little house. When Shayna was twelve, her parents had another child, a son. Shayna thought it was sort of weird, having a kid so late after the first, but she didn't care. He made her parents happy, and to be honest, she didn't think she did. They were close-minded, and she was open-minded, accepting of nearly everyone. She loved the outdoors and being alone and being a "cowgirl". They hated the life they had once led. When she turned thirteen, she asked to go to boarding school, and they eagerly agreed. Tensions had been high in the house for the longest time.
Shayna thought she'd be happier at boarding school, learning skills she would need to someday become a good trainer and breeder. She wasn't. She was just as anti-social, although Cadell, to be fair, attempted to help her make friends. She just wasn't into it. She passed her classes with flying colors, and eventually realized she wasn't learning anything. Before that day, though, she had made many enemies in her school. A girl named Sage thought she was stuck-up, and wasn't afraid to let everyone else know she thought so. A boy ended up using her, pretending to like her and then humiliating her in front of everyone. Cadell very nearly attacked the boy's daemon, but they fled too fast. Shayna withdrew more and more, and finally, at the age of fifteen, she left. She went back home for a year, trying to get along with her parents and her now nearly four year old brother, but it didn't work. She just wasn't happy there either. She struggled for a year, and then announced she would like to go on her Pokemon journey. Her parents allowed it, relieved to let the tensions in the house die down once more with their redheaded daughter gone.
Career:
Trainer/Breeder
The Daemon
Name:
Cadell
Form (If settled):
Sandslash

Appearance:
Cadell is a very normal looking Sandslash, except a small red mark on one of his sides. It doesn't look much like anything, it's just a small splotch of red fur. He also has hazel eyes much like Shayna's, though this could just be because his eyes were that color, not that they're a match.
Personality:
Cadell is what Shayna cannot be. He is everything she wishes she could be, but is too afraid to let go and actually be. He's a jokester, and a prankster. He loves to be loud, and mess around. He's the type to run right on up to someone and start chattering away. However, he is a bit like his other half. He's extremely sweet and a perfect gentleman, when the mood takes him. He believes in taking risks, and is often annoyed by Shayna's more careful nature. He pushes her to take chances and adventure. In fact, he's one of the main reasons she is traveling. Without his insistance, she probably would have stayed at home. Cadell is a very persuasive daemon when he wants to be, and Shayna's a bit of a push-over at any rate.
