Soul Setter Weyr
Virus Background/History…
It was a simple mistake. A small bird suddenly died, thought another simple disease had struck the birds they let it go. What were we going to do, we just let it go of course, but this was during Kitta Ping’s first dragons.
It was the first pass, the disease was played with, and birds were dissected and destroyed to see where this virus came into affect. Kitta Ping didn’t see anything at first, her creatures did well. They grew for more then a few years, even after she died. When her daughter took over and created the first wher was this virus surfaced again. The eggs hatched to reveal dead whers that had feathers in some of their hide, but the dragons were fine. Thinking this a simple mistake on her part, Kitta’s daughter didn’t see anything wrong. She hadn’t put any bird genes with the whers. Going back into research, she found nothing even after her death, things still seemed right. After the death of the wher, those that survived where come to be called Watch-wher’s and those of the south, southern whers. It was the watch-wher’s that resembled the dead bird-whers, as they were come to be called. This affect of the watch-whers made them even worse to handle or want to be bound to. From this day, the legend of bird-wher’s started to die. Watch-wher’s were impressed to few and laid few.
A few passes after the bird-whers, the virus was all but forgotten. Only a few whispers were heard, and they were legends, tales of great creatures that would eat children in the night if they did wrong. Even after all this the virus still didn’t come to be. But suddenly, it was a nearby weyr that had the most attention. The weyr with this much attention was called Fort Weyr. Older then some of the others, for some reason a whole horde of whers and their bonds had moved to this place. A gold had recently laid, but it wasn’t a southern wher that had laid. It was a Watch-wher from a local group of travelers. The wher had run from her bonded and wound up in the weyr where she had laid her eggs not far from the hatching ground. Asking the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader for forgiveness, they let the gold stay on the sands and hatch her eggs. Because Watch-wher’s were ugly creatures and the gold dragons hated any wher, the eggs were moved from the hatching sands to another place further back away from the light.
It was longer then expected, but finally the eggs hatched and the ugly little creatures were impressed by anyone who walked by. A little gold was hatched and somehow impressed to the Weyrwomans daughter. Angry at this outcome, the weyrwoman still went ahead with planes and let her daughter stand at the hatching that was to take place the very next day. She impressed a green instead of the gold and her sister took the gold.
After the impression, only two others were left while the rest took to the forests and went there own way. A few that had impressed moved to other holds or weyrs. Those that did seemed fine, but it was the gold that the girls impressed that seemed so strange. Her attitude wasn’t right. She was more like a giant flitt then anyone had every seen. She loved everyone, even the dragons. Getting into trouble when she suddenly went after a dragons tail and wanted to play. Waking the great dragons at all hours of the night she would play tag with the friendly dragonets while hissing and hiding from the grown ones.
During a rise of the gold, the weyr saw a strange change in her. She became more picky, furious and dangerous. Thinking it was simply the wher being around, they ordered her to keep the wher out of the way and so did. The gold flew stronger and laid many. It was a clutch of 50 eggs, so rare on pern that the dragons of all colors were sent out to find anyone to impress. Children of 10 and up were taken from home and given to the weyr. What was so surprising was the strangeness of the colors. Two eggs were far too large, and indeed were gold’s. Even better for the weyr, because they’re old gold was dieing with her rider. It was the day before the hatching when the elder gold suddenly went between with her rider, the mate of hers stayed behind to watch as the eggs hatched. Depressed, the rider only waited and watched in horror at what he saw.
It was a seven-day after my mate’s death. She and her gold between when Crusanth suddenly felt tired and wanted to rest forever. My mate kissed me and left a note for our daughter to follow. Still to young for her own good I read this note and kissed my mate goodbye. Now the dragons hum, I can feel it in my vary soul. At the weyr trembles from it and everyone gets ready, not in so many passes has there ever been two gold’s in one clutch so large. Maybe not like this anyway. It is an omen; I must remain for them until I know.
The hatching started out well, two bronzes hatched first, a good sign. They impressed a few of the boys on the sands, then browns, blues, greens, and even a strange lime followed. The greens impressed both male and female, but we are running out of candidate fast. Some of the eggs aren’t even rocking, are they duds, no one has moved. The largest, a gold by the looks. A crack, so large and appealing, surly the eggs are strong like their mother was. A small gold nose poked out, yes a gold, this was good another gold was to be impressed. The egg next to her also rocked and it too had a small gold claw shoot out of the side. Surly they are both gold’s; none could ever be so modest like them. All but those strange eggs had hatched; it was the two gold’s that were watched though. A gasp from my left had me looking at the gold on the right. By the first egg, this was no dragon. My queen didn’t lay what stood on those sands, it wasn’t possible. The wings, those beautiful wings had feathers. The second gold poked her way out of the shell. Thank you Farenth, it was a normal gold. No feathers stood on her hide. But this, this abomination wasn’t allowed. What had happened? All those strange eggs were the same as the gold, they impressed, but it was strange, they slipped passed every one of the candidates and took those they wanted from the stands. Our own gold followed after the feathered freak and took the sister of the girl as a rider. The feathers were what were so startling, what could have caused this.
After the clutch was recorded, they were studied by the others and shunned. The older riders didn’t like any of the new colors, even those that were suppose to impress were furious that such creatures would chose a person from the stands, then have there only gold hatchling take the very sister of the creatures to be impressed. Those from the stands became good friends while those who were from the weyr or searched shunned them. Even the goldrider from the stands became a outcast because she wanted to be near her sister.
After the incident with the eggs, other creatures started to appear. Suddenly there were age-old creatures feared and loved coming to life. One of the local holds had runners, the lord holders son had hidden the fact sense before the hatching that the Holders were breeding winged creatures with wings, or rather winged runners. They grew like any other runner, and became quicker and faster. After that other breeds started to change, the dogs of pern grew less hair and became shorthaired things with feathered wings as well. All these new creatures suddenly started to bond, they each grew and changed to have different names. The dragons, dogs, and runners, created a weyr for themselves that came to be called Soul Setter Weyr. This was welcome to all that were different and shunned, all because they were shunned and different then what most were use to. Both gold rider sisters took this weyr, one of webbed wings and other of feathers.
