Ria had lived down the road from the labs since she was born, growing up listening to the sounds of the pokemon roaming in the lands behind the laboratory. She'd overslept and, panicking, had barely the time to throw on a smock dress, splattered with paint, and leggings, slipping her feet into some ballet flats and ran out the door, dragging a comb through her hair as she went. It wasn't even a five minute journey up the road to the front of the lab and, after all that, she was on time, if not a few minutes early.
Ria knocked on the door of Pine Laboratory, Kenji clinging to her back, and watching over her shoulder. The future-trainer's hair was currently electric green with pink stripes and, to match, Kenji's fur was also a vivid green and the hand shaped end to his tail was the same pink as Ria's highlights. They hadn't completely decided what pokemon they wanted, but had narrowed it down to two fire types and were looking forward to see what the different ones would be like. The pair had decided to make their choice based on temperment and unusual appearances as that was a bit of a trademark for them. Kenji jumped lightly from her shoulders and into her arms, Ria gathered him up into a hug and smiled "I guess it's time to meet our new partner"

Professor Pine grunted in surprise at the sound of the knocking, the noise driving him back into the waking world. He blinked. Had he fallen asleep... oops. He supposed it probably hadn't been such a good idea to stay up so late on his latest project and come in so early... anyway, he needed to get to the door. A future trainer was here, so he had to answer her knock. Telepa, his daemon, hooted softly, fluttering to his shoulder from her perch on his desk while they had been sleeping. He hurriedly tidied himself as he rushed to the door.
Yanking open, Pine breathed out. Phew, he didn't seem to have kept the trainer waiting for too long- perhaps a minute maximun. He grinned a little nervously and sheepishly as he looked at Ria. Ur... what was up with her hair? And her daemon's fur? Ah, whatever. He'd met weirder people. He smiled, although his tiredness was still obvious in the black bags under his eyes. "Hello, and welcome to Pine Labs. I'm Professor Pine, and my daemon is Telepa." he introduced himself, waving Ria inside the lab.
Inside was a sort of entrance room, taken up by a table, desk, sofa and a number of filing cabinets. The walls were covered in posters of various sorts, and there was a wide space on the floor for trainers to view starter options. "What Pokémon do you have in mind for your starter?" Pine asked.

"Hi, I'm Ria, this is Kenji," the aipom clung to her shoulder with one hand, using the other to wave enthusiastically at the professor who looked very tired, the bags under his eyes evidant of a late night.
They stepped inside the entrance hall and Ria smiled nervously, "well, we've narrowed it down to either a ponyta, maybe even a shiny ponyta, or a growlithe, but really it comes down to personality, so..." she trailed off, hating making things difficult for people though she doubted the professor minded, on the contrary, he was probably used to it. "maybe- maybe we could meet more than one, if they're available, and you don't mind, of course..." she trailed off again, smiled then looked at the floor.

Pine smiled. "Yeah, sure." he said, walking over to his filing cabinet and digging a hand into the mass of Pokéballs, looking around for the Pokémon Ria had asked for. Let's see... two Growlithe, two Ponyta. One of the Ponytas was a shiny. He hoped that among these Pokémon would be the one Ria wanted as a starter, but it would be hard to tell until she had seen their personalities. That was good of her, to want to see them. "OK, take your pick." he told her, releasing the four Pokémon.
The first Growlithe was a very typical Growlithe, although perhaps a little on the stupid side. It padded up to Ria, grinning a goofy, doggy grin, tail wagging furiously. It seemed a sweet, friendly Pokémon, just... not the sharpest tool in the shed. The second Growlithe seemed more fierce, the kind which expressed its loyalty in defending its trainer rather than extreme friendliness. It stood beside Ria, looking around protectively. The shiny Ponyta seemed like a bit of a loner, tossing its head and moving to investigate its surroundings. The normal Ponyta was an intelligent Pokémon, and seemed a little shy and insecure, but freindly none the less, curiously trotting close to Ria and watching her with big chocolate eyes, eventually nuzzling her hand with its head. Which of these four would Ria pick?

Ria laughed, bending down to ruffle the hair on the growlithe's heads, but it was the shiny ponyta that caught her eye, the others were very friendly but this one seemed lonely, like it could do with a trainer. She walked over to it, offering her open palm and was careful not to touch her, ponyta's only let experienced trainers touch them, otherwise they got burned. The ponyta nuzzled her hand, the blue flame burning fiercely down its back, looking amazing against it's pale coat. "I think I'll have this one," she smiled, laying a hand on the ponyta's neck, she felt it tense slightly, the blue flame burning more strongly but none of it touched her hand. The ponyta relaxed slowly and Ria smiled, hoping the pokemon would get used to her quickly.

The shiny Ponyta pulled away again, mane flaring up a little more; it was still very timid and didn't really want to be in contact with humans too much. It snorted, tossing its head nervously. Professor Pine had personally thought that the normally coloured Ponyta would have been a better choice, since it seemed more friendly and had actually nuzzled her hand intentionally. He hoped the Pontya's shinyness hadn't altered her choice in any way; It wasn't always good to go with a shiny Pokémon since they were often lonely or very obnoxious. He just hoped Ria would still manage to get along with her choice.
Still, she'd made a decision. Pine returned the two Growlithe and the Ponyta that hadn't been chosen, leaving out the selected starter as usual. He handed the shiny Ponyta's Pokéball over to the new trainer, smiling as his daemon took off from his shoulder. She swooped over to the shelves, which were within the boundries of how far she could go from her human. She swooped back, dropping a drawstring bag into his hands before perching on his shoulder again. Pine then handed this bag to Ria. "Your starter's items. OK, you're all set. Now, good luck on your journey!" he wished as it was time for Ria to leave.

Ria moved her hand away, murmuring apologetically to the ponyta, she really didn't want to scare it but the pokemon's personality meant that it would be a challenge and it deserved a trainer. She liked that it was quieter than the others, similar to herself in some respects, and the unusual colourings made it stand out. She smiled at the pokemon gently, yup, Ria thought her starter would get along with them well, "Tenshi," she named it, the japanese word for angel.
"Thank you," she beamed at the professor, taking the pokeball and starter items and putting all of them into her bag, "I'll, um- see you later, thanks again" she waved goodbye to the professor as she headed out of the door and down the road once more, stopping off briefly at home to show Tenshi to her Mum. The open road was ahead of them and a new adventure awaited, she couldn't wait.
