The Character
Name: Zhang Xuan
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Pokemorph: Yes; Weavile.
Appearance:
First things first: Xuan is not a human. At least, she isn't fully human; one can easily tell from her ears and forehead that she is a Weavile Pokémorph. Thankfully, those are about the only visible parts that resemble a Weavile. Her ears, as mentioned, do not even look like those of a human. Instead, they are long and flat, dropping downwards at an angle that she cannot consciously control. An amber jewel is set deep into her forehead. It does not pain her in any way; the growth was present since her birth, and is sealed into her head. However, attempting to remove it may cause death. That jewel glows whenever she morphs into her Pokémon.
Xuan is not a tall girl. In fact, she stands at only one and a half metres, a good amount shorter than her peers. Add to that a stocky build, a pair of glasses and a blunt personality, and you've got the perfect mixture for a bully-magnet. Being more sturdy than graceful, Xuan's gross motor skills are rather compromised, causing her to gain an aversion to sports. However, she is pretty deft with her hands, and despite her less-than-perfect eyesight, she is capable of fine work.
Dressed usually in her favourite set of clothes, Xuan doesn't stand out much in a crowd – unless it's summer. Being an Ice-typed Pokémorph, she has a much lower body temperature than the average humans. Also, she isn't very resistant to extreme temperatures, as one might think. So, she wears a hoodless coat with a fur cuff, all year round, with the sleeves rolled up during the warmer months. Under that goes a dark blue v-necked T-shirt, and below her torso, a pair of long black track pants. Being a strong hater of jeans and dresses, Xuan is rarely, if ever, seen in those. She prefers simplicity to beauty. To end it all off, she has the conventional belt for Pokéballs and Pokédexes, a pair of hiking boots, and a backpack for her other items.
Xuan has long, reddish-black hair that hints towards the Pokémon genes in her body, slanted black eyes, and a prominently large nose. Not one to care about physical appearances, she ties her hair into a ponytail, only leaving two long, sharp strands of hair to hang in front of her face, well out of her eyes. Cropping her hair short would not do – she couldn't risk it becoming any harder, coarser or spikier than it is now. Two thick strands of hair dangle in front of her shoulders from behind her ears, and that's about it. She keeps all stray hairs out of her eyes with a large maroon scarf, which rather resembles the crest on a Weavile's head. The knot goes under her ponytail – or it would simply just slip off her head. As a means to correct her myopia, Xuan wears a pair of rectangular, wide spectacles.
She carries a single-lined, A5 exercise book as her journal-slash-learning-log. When it has been used up, she has quite a number of the same, so her journal isn't likely to change much in appearance. It is never far away from her, and never decorated with anything besides her full name. Also, something that is deemed a must-have for her would be a thick, ring-bound sketchpad, a quarter of the pages filled with various biological sketches – some of the subjects bordering on being disturbing in appearance.
Personality:
Not one to talk to others spontaneously, one would first notice that the girl is quiet. She responds to others speaking to her, but any prolonged conversation not about an interesting (in her opinion) topic is likely to result in awkward silences. Xuan does not like to mince words; if she doesn't wish to converse, or even to give consideration to some certain thing, she will say so. It isn't that she doesn't care about others' feelings. She just thinks that beating around the bush is inefficient and time-wasting – and her world is all about efficiency.
The girl enjoys putting her time to good use. She doesn't like mindless chores, though; her notion of work encompasses only scientific research, hands-on activities with Pokémon, and diligently keeping a log of her findings. Her aspiration is to become a Pokémon Breeder of the highest class: someone who selectively breeds between each species to achieve the optimum compromise between the traits. Thus, she is usually found engrossed in a heavy book – typical of the literature her field usually holds – or engaged in quiet conversations with her Pokémon.
Despite being a 'morph, Xuan actually doesn't share the "link" with real Pokémon, save for her Daemon. She views her Weavile parts as an asset, and just that. Not the most empathetic of humans, she is more aloof – as if her feelings were in a separate self. Thus, she doesn't consider selective breeding unfavourable in any way. Also, she doesn't resent the scientists for making her a morph, and thus something scorned and sidelined by the society. This is mostly because she is more introverted than extroverted, and prefers to be alone rather than in company anyway.
She tends to be rather blunt and to-the-point, as aforementioned, but she would apologise if she realises that her actions have hurt another's feelings – that is, if she is sincere. Xuan does not like to pretend to be someone she is not. This gives the impression that she is a proud, standoffish person; maybe she is, deep down, but it has been buried over many years of being ostracised. Generally, her view of herself is that she is simply different from others, a fact that she is both slightly proud of yet almost resentful for. She doesn’t view herself as more or less than a normal human, apart from the fact that she has Weavile genes in her.
The fact that she only distances herself from human males and not male Pokémon ought to be mentioned. When she was young, the girl had been marked out as the "freak" in the school she was studying at. A rowdy gang of boys also did. It is easy to predict what would happen, and until this day, Xuan had not met any counterexamples to her stereotype of male humans. Thus, she prefers to be around women, rather than men, though it sometimes irks her that said women usually focus on more trivial things. However, she has met quite a few who are of the same mindset as she is. She has no preference over Pokémon genders.
Overall, she's not the most likeable person to be with, but if you enjoy a scientific talk/debate and do not mind her less-than-diplomatic manners (not to mention the fact that you're not talking to someone completely human), you might just have a friend there.
History:
Conceived in a test-tube; born in a Petri dish: the life of many a Pokémorph.
Such was the life of Xuan, who was named Weavile003, back when she was created. She was straightaway rejected when she was old enough to live off a life-support machine – not lithe or muscular enough, no visible claws, not compatible for future injections. She was the third project that this certain group of scientists have undertaken, hoping to create a new type of spies that could benefit the region during times of war. While the common belief of the group was that Pokémorphs, not being entirely human, were therefore lower than humans, this failure of a 'morph was reconsidered before being disposed of, due to its vast similarity to a human baby. The scientists discussed the fate of the newborn, not wanting to kill something with so much humanity in it. But to raise her themselves...! That idea was immediately shot down. No, they could not keep an infant in such close proximity to chemicals and equipment, some of them poisonous or sharp, others rather expensive. After a while, one of them volunteered his closest friends, a couple of herptile-based-Pokémon Breeders, who could not conceive their own children. Maybe they would take a 'morph in; he wasn't sure, but he'd ask them.
They agreed, and Weavile003 had a new home and a new name. She was whisked away on one dark night to the couple's home, and there, the necessary paperwork was efficiently done by the administrative few of the laboratory. Zhang Xuan was supposedly adopted from an orphanage that had been destroyed by a landslide; anyone that actually made it a point to check out said orphanage would realise that it had never really existed.
The couple owned a large estate off the Element Safari, where they took in Pokémon from clients, bred them for a fee (or, more commonly, one egg from the pair) and looked after injured Pokémon. They were different from the Daycare Centre and the Pokémon Centres in that they specialised only in reptile or amphibians, and sometimes in birds and fishes – rarely mammals. Neither did they have the high-tech equipment of the Pokémon Centre, relying instead on traditional remedies and vast experience. They had adopted many a child, some with deformities, some unable to fit in with the society, and raised them to be well-respected Breeders. They had many apprentices as well; those who actually made it in had to undergo a lengthy interview, and were hand-picked from the masses by the couple themselves. They took pride in their work. Helping Pokémon and people alike, to them, was the ultimate goal in life. Xuan unconsciously adopted this belief, to a certain extent: she believed wholehearted in helping Pokémon and people, but her thoughts about the latter changed, later in life. But, for now, she was content to live with her adoptive parents, roaming the grounds with her Daemon.
Time passed pretty quickly: soon, it was time for the girl to enter school. One bright spring morning, Xuan was packed off to a neighbourhood school, to begin what would soon become a mixture of nightmare and bliss for her.
Upon entering the classroom with a smile on her face, the Pokémorph was soon stopped short by the fact that all eyes were on her and that there was total silence in the room. Very soon, whispers broke out amongst the seven-year-olds: "She's a freak." "Look at her forehead!" "Will she bite?"
As one can predict, Xuan was immediately shunned by her classmates. A few attempted to make friends with her, but soon, they became unnerved by the gem that was set into her forehead – rather like a third eye, peering out at them. Her few acquaintances drifted away, and already a bunch of boys were singling her out to be picked on. Even her teacher had to force herself to smile down at this unusual student without shuddering. The first three years in school were the hardest for the morph. The boys ganged up on her, calling her names, sabotaging her work and sometimes resorted to physical violence. Xuan always bit her lip and endured it, though deep down she wished she could fight back. Since that was nearly impossible, what with everyone in the school biased against 'morphs, she could only burrow deeper into the recesses of knowledge education offered, and hope that one day, she could outshine them in that region. Jun protested; he believed that they shouldn't take this ostracism dealt to them. The Daemon, however, was eventually shunned into silence, with year upon year of ostracism. They kept to themselves, never trying to draw attention.
However, later on, Xuan began to develop a fierce passion for science – more specifically, breeding and caring for Pokémon. The second pivot of her life was when she graduated from her Trainer School, which only provided for education up to ten years old. With quite a few trophies and certificates to pave her way, Xuan was accepted with some negotiation into one of the best school for Breeders in the region, situated in a part of Enera more tolerant, even accepting, of Pokémorphs. By then, she was already an experienced handler with Pokémon like Arbok and Seviper, thanks to the experience she had with her own parents' collection of Pokémon, and she could even coach an Ekans who had much trouble feeding to grow into a Pokémon of impressive girth. And she had her goal in mind: to become a professional breeder. It would give her many chances to observe the Pokémon in the safety of her own home, instead of hiking out to the wild and risk being seen by others. She spent two years, reading the literature present in her field and making use of the resources in the school. She kept to herself, never spontaneously striking up conversations with others.
When she was about to begin a new year at the school, now thirteen, her adoptive parents decided that it was time for her to get out and explore Enera. News of never-before-seen wild Pokémon has been reaching them for some time; they could not leave, for their obligations to the Pokémon the kept and bred. Xuan, on the other hand, was free to travel. She could hold her own in a Pokémon battle well enough, evident in the few she had taken part in at her graduation. She reluctantly agreed. The idea of wild Pokémon was certainly tempting. Thus, at the age of thirteen, with her restless Daemon prompting her forwards, Xuan took her first steps on the journey to Breederhood.
Career: Trainer for now, will probably become a Breeder.
The Daemon
Name: Jun
Form (If settled): Most likely will never settle; he is, after all, too fickle, and Xuan is a 'morph.
Favourite Form/s (If not settled):
In order of commonness:
• Treecko; he enjoys a lithe body and easy movement through foliage.
• Weavile; this is Xuan's Pokémon.
• Swellow; he loves to fly, and he can travel about ten metres away from Xuan.
• Arcanine; when he thinks Xuan needs protecting or a mount.
• Ekans; he knows Xuan likes them curled up around her neck, so he does that when he wants to comfort her.
Appearance:
In general, Lin appears to be a normal Treecko. He is of the normal colour, size and weight of the species, but has the added ability, of course, to change shapes when he sees fit. His eyes are always black, though; they match to Xuan's own pair. Sometimes, in other shapes, he can be identified that way. They are also slightly slanted downwards, giving him a slightly distrusting, wary and fierce look. However, couple with those eyes is often a crooked grin that offsets his rather intimidating gaze.
In Weavile form, he's taller and thinner than the norm. His colouring is more brilliant, as well, but can shift back to the normal colours when he concentrates. Generally, when not in his favoured Treecko form, his colouration is always more saturated. He is never found shiny, though.
His Arcanine stripes differ from the usual pattern by being more winding than jagged. They taper smoothly at the ends, and sometimes may fade out as well, instead of ending starkly. His dark belly also fades into the fiery orange of his body, also more vibrant than the muted tones of a normal Arcanine. His fur is softer, as well.
Personality:
Jun is, instead of Xuan-in-Daemon-form, a complement to her personality. He isn't similar to her at first glance; where Xuan is withdrawn, subdued, and quiet, he is proud, proud and proud. He isn't afraid to stand up for himself and his Pokémorph, if needed; in fact, most of the time, he takes it upon himself to protect the both of them. He is more like a drawn-out inner Xuan, in this aspect. Where her pride is hidden deep below, his is ever present. He isn't unreasonable, though. He will usually listen to Xuan if he is told so.
Adding to that, he is less closed-in than she is. He does enjoy making friends, especially amongst other Pokémon and Daemons (though only a few socialise with him, and occasionally), and likes to discuss things. He shares the interest in life sciences with Xuan; he is observant, and will point out the things she has missed in her theory, experiments or sketching. They both prefer being with each other to being with someone else, as well, but Jun does not mind so much.
He isn't as productive and efficient as his Pokémorph, either. While she uses her spare time to do things she likes or needs doing, he likes to idle and think. Despite his big mouth and bigger ego, Jun thinks surprisingly deeply, sometimes. He ponders things about right and wrong: whether Pokémorphs, like his Xuan, are acceptable if they were created; whether Pokémon being genetically edited are fine; whether if is pointless to stand up to everything life throws at them. Most of the time, when he gets uncomfortable thinking too deeply, he will shrug it off and return to enjoying himself.
((Say, the guidelines remind me of Kasui Region... XD Very useful!
Also, I had been using this character in aforementioned Region before, so I had to cut out bits of her history and add in connectors to make it match with Enera. Thus, if you find some strange bits, or that it isn't flowing well generally, please do tell me and I'll further edit it.
Thirdly, I'm going for an Ultra Rare (er, as a personal goal only, though -- I think), so please help me and tell me what to add/subtract(/multiply, teehee!)? > < Thanks!
P.S. There's a problem with the coding. The "The Daemon" part originally did not have an end-tag for the [*center] tag. O:))
